Hello, I'm one of the first people that succesfully used the Akitio Thunder2 with a Macbook, now after years I really want a working plug and play solution on Windows. Last year I have tried to get a 100% good working Dell XPS 15 9550, after three different purchases I gave up with this serie. The FHD variant seems to have a lot of issues with the screen (like dead pixels and dust in the screen, but also wrong keyboards and bad touchpads). Dell support is one of the worst customer support I have ever encountered. Now after reading the news about their Thunderbolt speed 'scam' I am looking for other options. My budget is around 2000 euro. Below I have listed my three options with my motivation.
HP ZBook Studio G3 ~ 1450 discounted model + 300 upgrades = 1750 euro (going to be upgraded by myself) i7-6700HQ, 256GB PCIe SSD, 8GB RAM, FHD, Quadro M1000M Two TB3 ports, amazing combination with the ZBook TB3 Dock, 3 years HP warranty, flexible with upgrades, available immediatly. Unsure eGPU capabilities, fan noise issues, all connections on the right side (where you place your mouse), laptop size compared to the others, poor GPU for gaming.
Dell XPS 15 9560 2017 ~ 1800 euro i7-7700HQ, 512GB PCIe SSD, 16GB RAM, FHD, GTX 1050 Great design and fits in my current setup. Dell support, overheating, quality issues, unsure TB3 port?, unknown delivery dates in Netherlands.
Razer Blade 15 L2016 ~ 2300 euro i7-6700HQ, 512GB PCIe SSD, 16GB RAM, FHD, GTX 1060 Plug and play eGPU compatibility, Compact format, Great keyboard. Not available in the Netherlands, must import it therefore warranty is not really guaranteed, upgrading the laptop voids warranty claimed by Razer.
As you can see the best choice for me would be either the HP ZBook or the new Dell XPS. Personally I think the HP laptop is a great device because of the dual TB3 ports and ZBook docking. Using this docking station you can connect the ZBook using ONE TB3 cable to the dock, providing several different ports and also includes charging of the laptop. More info about this dock is: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/workstations/zbook-dock.html
Note that this dock supports TB3 daisy chaining, so would it be possible to connect the ZBook to this dock, and from this dock on to the eGPU box? Using this construction I can connect all my devices to the HP laptop, charge the laptop and connect the eGPU.
Also, I'm quite surprised that nobody tested this ZBook? I saw some incomplete information about someone testing it (in a Gdocs sheet), but the person didn't even test it properly, what a shame.
What is your opinion about this? Would the ZBook be a good eGPU laptop? Would it work at all? Or should I wait for the new Dell XPS?
Thanks for reading ?

You've outlined all the reasons to get a Zbook G3 over a Dell XPS. It's two TB3 ports giving confidence it's a x4 3.0 PCIe link between the TB3 controller and the notebook PCIe bus.
Alternatives to the Zbook G3 would be the chunky Dell M7510, M3510 and (possibly) Latitude E5570. The Latitude is somewhat hard to find with a TB3 port but may vary by region. Still a question mark if they have a x4 3.0 PCIe link, though some lspci.txt output I found on the M7510 does suggest that to be the case.
Acer Nitro Black another alternative but Zbooks trump them for quality and business peripheral features.
I say go for it and pls report. I too am eyeing the ZBooks. My previous ZBook 15 G2 was a great piece of equipment.

Thanks for your reply, how are you so sure that the two TB3 ports having both a x4 3.0 PCIe link? What do you think of the dock idea with daisy chaining? We are also not even sure if a eGPU would work?

The 2 TB3 ports would link back to your notebook at a single x4 3.0 junction point. So 40Gbps total PCIe+DP traffic across the two ports, with a maximum of 32Gbps of PCIe traffic. Connect say a eGPU and SSD TB3 storage and they'd get half each (16Gbps) under load.
If you want two dedicated 32Gbps PCIe channels, then get a 4-port 2016 15' Macbook instead. ifixit's teardown confirming it has two JHL6540 TB3 controllers (light blue squares above), one for each pair of USB-C/TB3 ports: https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/MacBook+Pro+15-Inch+Touch+Bar+Teardown/73395
Apple seemingly in partnership with Intel to have the best specced Thunderbolt machines per generation, and know it with their high pricetag.

Do you have any reference regarding the ZBook Thunderbolt specs? If it's really shared between those two ports, I think my dock + eGPU construction wouldn't work because the ports on the dock will consume bandwidth.

Intel's TB3 specs snippet from https://thunderbolttechnology.net/sites/default/files/HBD16235_Thunderbolt_TB_r05.pdf quoted and highlighed below confirm the two-port TB3 configuration has x4 3.0 of PCIe bandwidth.
Starting with Intel systems based on the 100 Series chipset, Thunderbolt 3 is delivered via a series of discrete silicon devices that have varying capabilities. The dual-port SKU supports two Thunderbolt 3 connectors. It takes four lanes of PCI Express Gen 3 as an input and two full (four-lane) links of DisplayPort 1.2a.
HP ZBook 15 G3 systemboard
HP Media Services Library -> systemboard view near the two TB ports confirming a single TB3 controller attached to two TB3 ports on the Zbook 15 G3. This follows Intels' guideline above. We can confidently say it has x4 3.0 PCIe bandwidth available. Now let's hope HP configured that as a single 40Gbps TB3 daisy-channel rather than 2x20Gbps separate channels. Guestimate based on Macbook configuration being it's a single 40Gbps Tb3 channel.

Today I have received the ZBook Studio G3, do you have any tools for me so we can get all relevant information?
Also the TB tool is saying that there is no support for an eGPU..

Had a look at your logs you sent. I can see two PCIe ports of interest. It looks like port5 below is configured to host your TB3 port given the huge amount of PCIe space allocated to it. The other port9 is your PCIe SSD.
I found my ZBook G2 would not enable the TB2 controller unless a TB2 device was attached. Similiarly there is no TB3 controller showing up in your logs so wouldn't expect Intel software to show eGPU support.
At least we know port5 that hosts the TB3 controller is running as x4 3.0 (32Gbps), so isn't neutered like the x2 3.0 of the XPS 9550.
Looking forward to you attaching an eGPU to this beastly system.

Offline I found Qarizma's ZBook 15 G3 Studio has a dsl6540 dual-port TB3 controller https://ark.intel.com/products/87402/Intel-DSL6540-Thunderbolt-3-Controller . Unlike a Dell XPS 9550, it's TB3 controller is attached to the root bridge at x4 3.0 (32Gbps) link speed. That is the maximum combined PCIe traffic that can go the TB3 ports at any moment.
I've asked Qarizma to post a hwinfo64 screen to be posted so other users can at-a-glance see for themselves.

Okay Dudes, I have the ZBook Studio G3 with nearly the same specs (i7-6820HQ, Shity 256GB m.2 SSD, 16GB RAM, FHD, Quadro M1000M). I know Qarizma said that the thunderbolt tool said that it had no eGpu support, but here is the screenshot for those interested:

The message 'External GPUs supported: No' does not mean that eGPU aren't supported, it's still possible. The Dell XPS 13 has the same message and works with an eGPU.
The Akitio Node could be an option, but the company isn't really good in releasing and marketing. The Razer Core should also work I think.

The Node firmware upgrade notes, copied below, addressing this very issue. Prior to updating the Node's firmware, theitsage's XPS 9350 failed to detect the video card in the enclosure as detailed:

With my Zbook G2 K2100M + GTX970 eGPU, the Quadro and Geforce didn't want to play nice together. With Quadro drivers, the GTX970 was detected but would say 'no monitor detected'. To get it working, I disabled the K2100M, removed the Quadro drivers and just ran the GTX970Geforce drivers. The ideal situation would be a modded unified driver that allows both to work concurrently.

To contrast that: With my K2100M G2 ZBook I ran a GTX750Ti and later a GTX960 with my K2100M enabled. I DDUed all the drivers and only installed the DESKTOP driver. The Quadro K2100M appears in the regular driver support list and it worked perfectly. You don't get Quadro features, but I didn't care for that, as I have this laptop for the CPU power, not its Quadro GPU, and it worked.
The one thing I did that nando did not: I disabled the iGPU in the BIOS. That made the whole setup more stable and reliable.

Hi, I just got the ZBook Studio G3 a few days ago in the Netherlands, and I'm excited to try the AKiTio Node with a GTX1080. But the Node will only be available in the US, and its release date is still unknown, isn't it? Anyway, from what I read in this thread, I feel optimistic that it would work, and I'll be posting results if I ever got it. Is the Node our best option at the moment?

I'm excited too to see your results on the Zbook G3. A very nice machine with confirmed 32Gbps-TB3 PCIe link.
Yes, the AKiTiO Node is the best option at the moment because it's latest firmware can get eGPU detection where other TB3 enclosures fail. B&H are giving a Feb-21 US release date. See the pertinent Node info at the top of https://egpu.io/forums/thunderbolt-enclosures/akitio-node-thunderbolt-3-egpu-enclosure/ .

I'm from the Netherlands too. As usual, it will take about half a year before new things like an eGPU comes to the Netherlands. The only eGPU that is available now is the ugly Devil Box:
It's around 475 euro for us. Comes with Ethernet and USB ports. Not sure about the compatibility with our ZBooks though. The downside of the Node is that it doesn't have any external ports, so it's only for a graphics card.

I got the AKITIO Node yesterday and I tested with Quadro M4000.
I bought Zbook Studio Base model without dedicated GPU. It has only Intel HD 530.
And I have another one with Quadro M1000m.
Result is.. It was good to work. I tested with Siemens NX10 and I don't know about the Performance . But it is better than M1000M of Zbook Studio G3.
The model I tested is Car assembly with 3500 components . and it is not a full data because of total file size is too big to fully open.
But it tested with fully loaded . not a lightweight model.
I don't know how can I describe the performance with score. because of Quadro is different with GTX.
But I think it'sworthatry.
Is there any software for testing Quadro GPU.. ? Especially performance of 3D CAD system.
